Contemporary Architecture is an eclectic combination of styles that allows the designer the freedom to create almost anything. It is the style of the 21st century. It combines the modern influence of the late 20th century and introduces sustainability. Some of the most iconic, modern buildings around the world are contemporary. For example, the One World Trade Center. This building unlike any other, was held to high expectations. This building was not only a replacement for the towers that fell, but it is a monument. A memorial. Now the tallest building in the western hemisphere, the One World Trade Center stands at a symbolic 1,776 feet tall. The building has faces that connect to form a perfect octagon at it's center. The prismatic glass that covers the building shimmers in the light giving the entire building a kaleidoscope effect; likening it to a lighthouse. Other than being designed to be "the safest" building in the world it's modern looks are both simple and striking. It is also one of the greener buildings in New York, taking advantage of natural light, rainwater collection, and recycling up to three quarters of its own waste.

Contemporary Architecture is not only limited to elaborate skyscrapers but is now growing in popularity in residential design. Contemporary homes are the epitome of expressiveness. They are far from the cookie cutter homes you see in a typical residential development. These homes put form and function at the forefront, making sure that visual aesthetics come first. Contemporary residences generally have an overall modern look but are sure to include an abundance of windows and a variety of building materials. Something typical of a contemporary home is the use of an unusual facade. Typically made out of an unconventional material, contemporary facades challenge the typical building face. Organic shapes, shapes mimicking nature, and the use of natural materials can make these otherwise plain buildings stand out.

The main distinction between modern and contemporary design is the influence of sustainability. Characteristics of contemporary homes include being energy efficient and using recycled materials in their construction. Solar panels are frequently used along with a large number of windows in an attempt to cut down on energy costs. The goal of contemporary architecture is to make buildings that are both aesthetically pleasing and good for the environment, as well as for future generations.
